Leo the Wise

    0.09 sec.

Leo (VI) the Wise (866–912)

Byzantine emperor 886–912, successor to his father, Basil I. He was a learned man, who continued his father's work of drafting new laws for the empire. However, during his reign, Constantinople's enemies continued to make gains: the Saracens completed their conquest of Sicily in 902 and began to encroach on Italy, and a devastating war broke out against Tsar Simeon of Bulgaria.
