Opera by Ferdinando Paër (libretto by G Cinti, based on Bouilly's libretto for Pierre Gaveaux), first produced in Dresden, Germany, on 3 October 1804. It tells how the political prisoner Florestan is rescued by his disguised wife (Leonore/Fidelio) when the evil Pizarro arrives to kill him.
