Liepāja

Naval and industrial port in Latvia, on the Baltic Sea some 190 km/118 mi southwest of Riga; population (2000) 89,400. The city was founded by the Livonian Knights (see Teutonic Knights) in 1253. It has a steelworks, and engineering, chemical, food, textile, woodworking, and fish canning industries.

Liepāja was the main exit port for Russian emigrants sailing to the USA in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
