Lerner, Alan Jay

Lerner, Alan Jay (1918–1986)

US lyricist. He collaborated with Frederick Loewe on musicals including Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), and Camelot (1960); and on the film Gigi (1958).

Most of his musicals became successful films. Gigi, written directly for film, earned nine Academy Awards. He also produced scripts such as An American in Paris (1951), for which he earned an Academy Award.

He studied at the Julliard School of Music, New York, New York, and earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1940. He wrote more than 500 radio scripts 1940–42.
