Lerwick

Port in Shetland, Scotland; population (2001) 6,800. It is the administrative headquarters of the Shetland Islands. The main occupations include fishing and oil supply services. Hand-knitted shawls are a speciality.

The annual fire festival of Up-Helly-Aa, is held in Lerwick at the end of January. A replica of a Viking longship is burned after a torch-light procession through the town. The festival dates from Victorian times and is based on Viking traditions.

Lerwick, the most northerly town in the UK, is on a natural harbour on the east coast of Mainland, Shetland, sheltered by the island of Bressay.
