Lesgian

Member of an indigenous people of Dagestan, also living in northern Azerbaijan and eastern Georgia. They are Sunni Muslims and speak 24 different languages. In the 18th century the Lesgians formed several khanates, which were at first semi-independent of Persia, but came under Russian domination between 1800 and 1830.

In the past, the name Lesgian was often applied to all the Dagestan mountain peoples.
