Lesvos

Greek island in the Aegean Sea, near the coast of Turkey; area 2,154 sq km/831 sq mi; population (2001) 190,600. The capital is Mytilene. Industries include olives, wine, and grain. The island was called Lesbos in ancient times and was an Aeolian settlement, home of the poets Alcaeus and Sappho. It was conquered by the Turks from Genoa in 1462 and was annexed to Greece in 1913.
