Letterman, David (1947- )

US television talk-show presenter. He was host of Late Night with David Letterman for the NBC network 1983-93, then moved to CBS to present The Late Show with David Letterman.

Letterman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was spotted by talent scouts for Johnny Carson's NBC Tonight Show (1978), and became a guest host. His first show, The David Letterman Show (1980), was critically acclaimed but ran for only 18 weeks before it was cancelled because of poor ratings. He has won several Emmy awards for his talk-shows.
