Leutze, Emanuel

Leutze, Emanuel (Gottlieb) (1816–1868)

German-born US painter. His famous historical paintings have been reproduced countless times, especially Washington Crossing the Delaware (1851). His popular mural, Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way (1862), is in the Capitol in Washington, DC. Leutze was born in Gmünd, Germany. He emigrated to the USA (1825), but went back to Europe many times to study (1841–c. 1861). When he returned, he lived in New York and Washington, DC.
