Leverett

Town in Franklin County, north-central Massachusetts, adjoining Amherst; population (1999 est) 2,000. Named after John Leverett, governor of the Massachusetts Bay Company, it was first permanently settled by Europeans in 1750 and incorporated in 1774. Early industrial products were agricultural implements, furniture, and charcoal, and 18th-century charcoal kilns can still be seen. However, the town is now rural and residential.

A Buddhist peace pagoda is situated in the town.
