Leverkusen

River port in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 8 km/5 mi north of Cologne; population (1995) 161,900. Industries include oil-refining and extensive petrochemical operations.

The vast Bayer chemical works is here. Its head office is sited in a building 122 m/400 ft high, the tallest office block in West Germany. The city's chemical plants provide raw material for a wide range of industries, including the production of synthetic fibres.
