Levertov, Denise

Levertov, Denise (1923-1997)

English-born US poet. She published her first volume of poetry The Double Image (1946), after which she moved to the USA. In the 1950s she was associated with the Black Mountain poets, and in the 1960s campaigned for civil rights. Poetry collections include Here and Now (1957), Candles in Babylon (1982), and A Door in the Hive 1993. Her essays on political, feminist, and creative issues appeared in O Taste and See (1964) and The Poet in the World (1973). Her 22nd collection, Sands of the Well, was published in 1998.
