Levittown

Community in Hempstead town, Long Island, southeastern New York, 16 km/10 mi east of New York City; population (1990) 53,300. It was built by the US builder William J Levitt between 1947 and 1951 as a residential community for World War II veterans. A total of 17,447 homes were constructed; the community also includes schools and extensive recreational facilities.

Levittown

Suburb in southeastern Pennsylvania, 31 km/19 mi northeast of Philadelphia and 14 km/9 mi southwest of Trenton, New Jersey; population (1990) 55,400. It was built as a residential community (1951-55) by Levitt and Sons, following the same mass-production formula the company had used in New York.

It comprises more than 40 coterminous communities in three townships and one borough, each with its own schools, shopping, and recreational facilities. It also has steel and chemical complexes.
