Levuka

Small port on Ovalau Island, Fiji Islands; population (1993 est) 1,100. Levuka was the site of the first European settlement in the Fiji Islands, and from 1874 to 1882 was capital of the British colony. Fishing is important, with the Pacific Fishing Company being the town's main employer.

Levuka retains much British colonial-style architecture.

The first Europeans to settle here were sandalwood traders in about 1806. The town thrived throughout the 19th century, with sailors and whalers visiting the area.
