Lewis, Anthony

Lewis, Anthony (Carey) (1915–1983)

English musicologist, conductor, and composer. He edited and conducted operas by Purcell, Jean-Philippe Rameau, and Handel. He was professor of music at Birmingham University 1947–68 and principal of the Royal Academy of Music, London, 1968–82.

He was educated at Wellington College and Cambridge University, studying music at the latter, and went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France. He was on the music staff of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) 1935–47 (except during his war service 1939–45), where he organized various music series including the music for the Third Programme (later Radio Three).

Choral Overture for unaccompanied voices; Elegy and Capriccio for trumpet and orchestra; horn concerto.
