Lewis, Denise (1972- )

English track and field athlete. She became known when she won the 1994 Commonwealth Games heptathlon title. She won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, and a silver at the 1997 World Championships. In 1998 she won the gold medal at the European Championships and retained her Commonwealth Games title. The following year, despite being troubled by injury, she won a second successive World Championship silver medal. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000 she won gold in the heptathlon.

She won the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) long jump title in both 1996 and 1998. In July 2000 she beat her own three-year-old Commonwealth record, scoring 6,831 points in competition in France. She was awarded an MBE in 1999.
