Lewis, Dixon Hall

Lewis, Dixon Hall (1802-1848)

US politician. A Democrat, he represented the state of Alabama in the US House of Representatives (1829-44), where he championed states' rights. In the US Senate (1844-48) he opposed the United States Bank. Lewis was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. A man of extraordinary weight, he required special arrangements to travel and to sit in assemblies. He practised law in Alabama.
