Lewis, Jerry (1926– )US comic actor and director. His zany, daft comic persona, for example in his title character in The Bellboy (1960), made him one of the most popular comedians of the 1950s and 60s. He worked in partnership with Dean Martin 1946–56; their film debut was in My Friend Irma (1949). Other films with Martin include Scared Stiff (1953), Living It Up (1954), Artists and Models (1955), and Hollywood or Bust (1956). His most well-known film after his partnership with Martin dissolved is The Nutty Professor (1963). He appeared in a straight role opposite Robert De Niro in The King of Comedy (1982).
