Lewisburg

Town and administrative headquarters of Union County, east-central Pennsylvania, on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, 32 km/20 mi south of Williamsport; population (1990) 5,800. Furniture and electronic products are produced here, and there are dairy farms and limestone quarries nearby.

It is the seat of Bucknell University (1846) and has a federal penitentiary.

Lewisburg

City and administrative headquarters of Marshall County, south-central Tennessee, on Big Rock Creek, 79 km/49 mi south of Nashville; population (1990) 9,900. It is a trade centre for a rich Nashville Basin agricultural area, and has had various light industries, including stove manufacturing.

The city is the world headquarters of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association.

Lewisburg

City and administrative headquarters of Greenbrier County, southeastern West Virginia, 11 km/7 mi west of White Sulphur Springs; population (1990) 3,600. It is an agricultural centre and home to medical institutions, including an osteopathic school.

History The settlement developed around Camp Union, where Virginia militiamen met in 1774 before the battle at Point Pleasant. On 23 May 1862, Union forces won a battle here during the American Civil War.
