Lewiston

City in Androscoggin County, southwest Maine, USA, across the Androscoggin River from Auburn; population (2000) 35,700. Industries include textiles, footwear, clothing, machinery, electronic equipment, and plastics. The river drops about 18 m/59 ft at the ‘Twenty-Mile’ Falls; after the development of waterpower in the 19th century, the community grew as a textile centre. Lewiston is the home of Bates College (1855) and Lewiston-Auburn College (1988).

Lewiston was settled in 1770 and incorporated as a city in 1863. The avant-garde painter Marsden Hartley, wrote of his childhood in the city.
