Lewistown

Town and administrative headquarters of Mifflin County, central Pennsylvania, on the Juniata River, 72 km/45 mi northwest of Harrisburg; population (1990) 9,300. It is a trading centre in a farming region and has diversified manufacturing, including the production of synthetic yarn, locomotive parts, clothing, and electronic equipment.

It was laid out in 1790 on the site of a Shawnee Indian village. Many Amish live in the area.
