Leyden, Siege of

    0.11 sec.

Leyden, Siege of

During the Netherlands War of Independence, siege of the Dutch city of Leyden (now Leiden) from 26 May–3 October 1574 by Walloon and German troops. The Dutch force was little more than the town guard and a few mercenaries, while the besiegers numbered about 8,000 and had ample artillery. To save the city, the Prince of Orange ordered the sea gates to be opened, bursting the dykes and flooding large areas surrounding the city. A Dutch fleet broke through the blockade at the end of September and the townspeople were then able to capture the remaining German redoubt, and the siege was broken on 3 October.
