Lhôte, André (1885-1962)

French painter, art teacher, and critic. He opened the Académie Montparnasse 1922 and founded a South American branch of the school in Rio de Janeiro 1952. He also wrote treatises on landscape painting and figure painting. Inspired by cubism, his own paintings are complex compositions of geometrical forms painted in pure colours, for example Rugby 1917 (Museum of Modern Art, Paris).
