Liaodong Peninsula

Peninsula in northeast China, forming part of Liaoning province; area 53,000 sq km/21,600 sq mi. The Gulf of Liaodong, part of the Bo Hai, is to the west, and Korea Bay, part of the Yellow Sea, to the east. Cities on the peninsula include Dalian, Anshan, and, further inland, Fushun. In 1988 the whole peninsula was declared open to foreign investment and trade.

Under the treaty that resulted, Russia yielded to Japan the Liaodong peninsula lease, the rail line to Port Arthur and Dairen, and southern Sakhalin, but retained the rest of the CER and a sphere of influence in northern Manchuria--until evicted completely in 1931.
