Liapunov, Sergey Mikhailovich (1859–1924)

Russian pianist and composer. From 1891 to 1902 he was assistant director of the Imperial Chapel, and from 1910 professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory. He fled to Paris, France, to escape the Russian Revolution.

He studied at Nizhegorodsk and at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1893 the Imperial Geographical Society commissioned him, with Mily Balakirev and Anatol Liadov, to collect Russian folk songs.

Works

Orchestral

two symphonies (1887, 1910–17), Ballad, Solemn Overture, Polonaise and symphonic poem Hashish for orchestra; two piano concertos (1890, 1909), rhapsody on Ukrainian themes for piano and orchestra (1908).

Piano and other

numerous piano pieces, including suite Christmas Songs, and other pieces; folk-song settings.
