Libby

City and administrative headquarters of Lincoln County, northwestern Montana, on the Kootenai River, 97 km/60 mi northwest of Kalispell; population (2000) 2,600. It is a trade centre for lumber, silver, copper, and vermiculite mining, and agricultural products.

Founded in the 1860s as a gold mining village, it saw the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1892.
