Liberal

City and administrative headquarters of Seward County, southwest Kansas, on the Oklahoma border, 112 km/70 mi southwest of Dodge City; population (2000) 19,700. It is a processing centre for grain and livestock, and aircraft and metals are manufactured here. Situated on the eastern edge of the Hugoton gas field, it also refines oil and natural gas.

The city is the seat of Seward County Community College (1967). Visitors are drawn to Dorothy's House, a replica of the farmhouse in the film The Wizard of Oz (1939).

US Route 54 between Liberal and Wichita has been officially designated The Yellow Brick Road.
