Libertad

Port of southern El Salvador, 37 km/23 mi south of San Salvador; population (1996) 40,600. It is the capital of the department of Libertad. The town is a fishing port and, in the dry season, a popular seaside resort.

For a long time, Libertad was El Salvador's largest port, but in 1976, it was closed to international commercial traffic.

It used to be the commercial centre of the ‘Balsam Coast’, so called because of the local plantations of balsam trees which, when tapped, produce balsam for pain relief medicine and for the perfume base known as ‘balsam of Peru’. Balsam is still produced here in relatively small quantities.

It is a growing surfing resort.

Libertad

The Pacific Ocean forms the southern boundary and on it lies the port of Libertad, the departmental capital. Rice, coffee, and sugar are grown in the south of the department and constitute a considerable export trade. Silver and gold are mined. The area contains volcanoes, the largest being San Salvador.
