Libertad

Department in southwest El Salvador; area 2,184 sq km/843 sq mi; population (1998 est) 501,000. The Pacific Ocean forms the southern boundary and on it lies the port of Libertad, the departmental capital. Rice, coffee, and sugar are grown in the south of the department and constitute a considerable export trade. Silver and gold are mined. The area contains volcanoes, the largest being San Salvador.
