The ‘Liberty Bell’ is housed in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Assembly commissioned the bell in 1751 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of William Penn's 1701 Charter of Privileges. Penn's charter formed Pennsylvania's original constitution.

The bell that was rung in 1776 on the occasion of the adoption by the new US Congress of the Declaration of Independence. It was cast in London 1752, with the motto ‘Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof’. The bell cracked the first time it was rung in Philadelphia in 1752 and again in 1835 and 1846. It is now preserved under glass outside Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
