Ancient Italian earth goddess connected with luxuriant nature and voluptuous pleasure. Her association with the underworld led to her transformation into the goddess of death and her later identification with Persephone.

At her sanctuary on the Esquiline at Rome, deaths were registered and everything necessary for funerals was sold or hired.
