Libuše

Opera by Bedřich Smetana (libretto in German, by J Wenzig, Czech translation by E Spindler), first produced at the Czech Theatre, Prague, in the modern-day Czech Republic, on 11 June 1881. It tells the story of Libuše, new queen of Bohemia, who must choose a husband to help her rule after her quarrelling brothers Chrudos and Št'áhlov refuse to obey her authority. She chooses the peasant Přemsyl.
