Lichtenstein, Roy (1923-1997)

US pop artist. He is best known for using advertising imagery and comic-strip techniques, often focusing on popular ideals of romance and heroism, as in Whaam! (1963; Tate Gallery, London). He has also produced sculptures in brass, plastic, and enamelled metal.

Born in New York City, he studied at the Art Student's League, New York, and Ohio University, where he taught (1946-1951). He was a product designer for various companies in Cleveland (1951-57), before returning to teaching in the fine art department of New York University (1957-60) and Rutgers University (1960-63). It was during the 1960s that he developed the pop art style for which he is now known.
