Licinius, Valerius Licinianus

Licinius, Valerius Licinianus (c. AD 250–324)

Emperor of the eastern Roman provinces 307–24. In 308 he was raised to the rank of Augustus of the west by the emperor Galerius, but declined to exercise it, but when Galerius died 311 he and Maximinus Daia became joint sovereigns of the eastern provinces. He defeated Maximinus 313, but was himself defeated by Constantine the Great 315 and again 324, when he was dethroned and killed.

Licinius was born in a peasant family in Dacia (modern Romania).
