Liebe der Danae, Die

    0.04 sec.

Liebe der Danae, Die

Opera by Richard Strauss (libretto by Josef Gregor), intended for production at the Salzburg Festival, Austria, and given a public dress rehearsal on 16 August 1944. Production was postponed owing to war; it was finally produced in Salzburg on 14 August 1952. (The title was originally Der Kuss der Danae/Danae's Kiss.) In the story, Danae, who spurns all men, is pursued by King Midas and Jupiter, favouring the ‘golden touch’ of Midas. She then falls genuinely in love with him, and continues to love him after vengeful Jupiter makes him destitute.
