Lieberman, Joe

    0.02 sec.

Lieberman, Joe (1942– )

US Democrat politician, senator for Connecticut since 1989. An experienced and moderate Democrat lawyer and politician, he ran unsuccessfully for vice-president in 2000, as running-mate to Al Gore. Lieberman strongly supported the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, but his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 was unsuccessful. He was the first Jewish politician to be nominated by a major party.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, Lieberman graduated from Yale Law School in 1967. He began his career in law, but served in the Connecticut State Senate between 1970 and 1980 and as attorney-general for Connecticut 1983–88, where he earned a reputation as a champion of consumers' rights and a crusader against polluters of the environment.
