Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen

Song-cycle by Gustav Mahler for low voice and piano (texts by Mahler), composed in 1884, orchestrated about 1895, and performed in this version in Berlin, Germany, on 16 March 1896, conducted by Mahler. The titles of the songs are: 1. Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht/When my Sweetheart Gets Married, 2. Ging heut' Morgen übers Feld/I Walked This Morning Through the Fields (thematically related to the first movement of the contemporary first symphony), 3. Ich hab ein glühend Messer in der Brust/I Have a Burning Knife in My Breast, and 4. Die zwei blauen Augen/The Two Blue Eyes. The work is also heard in a version with a chamber ensemble by Arnold Schoenberg.
