Lieder ohne Worte

Thirty-six piano pieces by Felix Mendelssohn in the form and character of songs exploiting the principle of accompanying melody rather than polyphonic textures. They are: Vol. I, Op. 19, nos. 1–6 (composed 1830–32); II, Op. 30, 7–12 (1833–7); III, Op. 38, 13–18 (1836–37); IV, Op. 53, 19–24 (1841); V. Op. 62, 25–30 (1842–43); and VI, Op. 67, 31–6 (1843–45). The only titles which are Mendelssohn's own are those of the three Venezianische Gondellieder (Venetian Barcarolles), nos. 6, 12, and 29, the Duetto, no. 18, and the Volkslied, no. 23.
