life-cycle analysis

Assessment of the environmental impact of a product, taking into account all aspects of production (including resources used), packaging, distribution and ultimate end.

This ‘cradle-to-grave’ approach can expose inconsistencies in many so-called ‘eco-friendly’ labels, applied to products such as soap powders, which may be biodegradable but which are perhaps contained in nonrecyclable containers.
