Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
BlitzkriegSwift military campaign, as used by Germany at the beginning of World War II (1939–41). It was characterized by rapid movement by mechanized forces, supported by tactical air forces acting as ‘flying artillery’ and is best exemplified by the campaigns in Poland in 1939 and France in 1940. The abbreviated Blitz was applied to the attempted saturation bombing of London by the German air force between September 1940 and May 1941.

Frieser sets the stage for the 1940 campaign in France in a generally chronological manner, and pursues parallel topics as diverse as the history of the word blitzkrieg, for lightning war (not coined by Hitler, as was later claimed), the relative strengths of fighter and bomber aircraft between the Germans and Allies, and whether Hitler actually had a strategic war concept. Its identity unknown, the arrival caused the Israelis great concern because they were about to start the final phase of their lightning war, an attack on Syria. About two-thirds of the book covers the deployment, preparations and post-conflict operations; the remaining one-third is a fine narrative of the lightning war. |
