Legnica

Capital of Legnica province, Poland, 64 km/40 mi west of Wrocław; population (2002) 107,100. Lead is refined from local mines, and cables, textiles, and chemicals are manufactured. Formerly in Lower Silesia, it was the capital of the Duchy of Liegnitz 1163-1675, passing to the Habsburg family before joining Prussia 1742 and then Poland 1945.

The town is situated on the River Kaczawa, a tributary of the Oder.
