Legnica

Capital of Legnica province, Poland, 64 km/40 mi west of Wrocław; population (2002) 107,100. Lead is refined from local mines, and cables, textiles, and chemicals are manufactured. Formerly in Lower Silesia, it was the capital of the Duchy of Liegnitz 1163–1675, passing to the Habsburg family before joining Prussia 1742 and then Poland 1945.

The town is situated on the River Kaczawa, a tributary of the Oder.
