Likasi

Town in Shaba province, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), 140 km/87 mi northwest of Lubumbashi; population (2004 est) 367,200. It is one of the country's largest cobalt- and copper-processing centres with associated chemical industries. The town was known as Jadotville until 1966.

Belgian explorers first discovered copper here in 1892 but the town was not founded until 1917.
