Baylis, Lilian Mary (1874–1937)

English theatre manager. She was responsible for re-opening Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, in 1931. From 1934 Sadler's Wells specialized in productions of opera and ballet: the resultant companies eventually became the Royal Ballet and the English National Opera.

After a period in South Africa, she returned to London in 1895, and managed the Old Vic Theatre from 1912, starting a complete series of productions of Shakespeare's plays. The National Theatre Company performed at the Old Vic 1961–76.
