Lill, John

Lill, John (1944– )

English pianist. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London and with Wilhelm Kempff, and made his London debut at the Royal Festival Hall in 1963. In 1970 he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He appeared at the Carnegie Hall, New York from 1969. He was awarded an OBE in 1978. He is noted as a powerful performer of 19th-century music, especially Beethoven.
