Lillard, Matthew (1970- )

US actor. His early roles were typically as eccentric, disturbed, and often sociopathic characters, in films such as Scream (1996), in which he achieved his breakthrough performance as a teen serial killer, as well as Serial Mom (1994), Hackers (1995), and Without Limits (1998). He brought the animated character Shaggy to life in the children's film Scooby-Doo (2002) and its sequel Scooby 2 (2004).

His first professional acting role was during the summer after his high school graduation, when he was hired as an extra for Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College. He was the MC of the children's show SK8 TV on Nickelodeon in 1990. He was a frequent collaborator with US actor Freddy Prinze, Jr, in such films as Wing Commander (1999), She's All That (1999), Summer Catch (2001), and the Scooby-Doo films.

He was born in Lansing, Michigan, but grew up in Tustin, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, from the age of seven. He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, California, and the Circle in the Square theatrical school in New York City. He formed the Mean Street Ensemble theatre company in California and the Summoner's Ensemble theatre company in New York. His theatrical experience was reflected in his performance in Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film Love's Labour's Lost (2000). Other films include films include The Perfect Score, Wicker Park, and Without a Paddle (all 2004).
