Colbert, Claudette (1903–1996)

French-born US film actor who emigrated to New York City at age six. She began acting on Broadway in 1923. She was ideally cast in sophisticated, romantic roles, but had a natural instinct for comedy and appeared in several of Hollywood's finest, including It Happened One Night (1934) (for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress), It's a Wonderful World (1939), Midnight (1939), and The Palm Beach Story (1942). In 1989 she was awarded a Kennedy Center Honors award for lifetime achievement.
