water lily

Any of a group of aquatic plants belonging to the water lily family. The fleshy roots are embedded in mud and the large round leaves float on the surface of the water. The cup-shaped flowers may be white, pink, yellow, or blue. (Genera Nymphaea and Nuphar, family Nymphaeaceae.)

The white water lily (N. odorata) is common in eastern North America as is the yellow-flowered spatterdock (Nuphar advena). Victoria regia, with leaves about 2 m/6 ft in diameter, occurs in South America.
