lime kiln

Oven used to make quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) by heating limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) in the absence of air. The carbon dioxide is carried away to heat other kilns and to ensure that the reversible reaction proceeds in the right direction: CaCO3 ⇌ CaO + CO2.
