limiting factor

In biology, any factor affecting the rate of a metabolic reaction. Levels of light or of carbon dioxide are limiting factors in photosynthesis because both are necessary for the production of carbohydrates. In experiments, photosynthesis is observed to slow down and eventually stop as the levels of light decrease.

It is believed that the concentrations of carbon dioxide building up in the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels will allow faster plant growth.
