Lincoln, Benjamin (1733-1810)

American military and political leader. As brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution 1775-83, he aided the victory at Saratoga 1777 but was forced to surrender to the British at Charleston 1780. He was secretary of war for the Continental Congress 1781-83, and led the suppression of Shays' Rebellion 1787.

Born in Hingham, Massachusetts, Lincoln served in the legislature and provincial congress prior to the American Revolution.
